Rebecca Johnson
Rebecca Johnson is an Australian-born creative and educator. Identifying as an artist-musician-teacher, she categorically divides her energy between these disciplines. Predominantly working as a painter and sculptor, her artworks are grounded in self-referentiality, examining the symbolic language of place, home, and heritage. Her artwork explores her family’s experiences of forcible displacement and transition between Ukraine and Australia post-war. The daughter of a refugee and war survivor, Rebecca’s art practice has provided a critical tool for processing the effects of intergenerational trauma. Her work interweaves the contrast of controlled hard-edged linear forms with loose gestural processes. Her creative process becomes an act, an embodied experience, at play within the metaphysical realm.
