Margaret Holloway, 'Nature, She Wrote', acrylic on canvas, 95 x 75 cm
“This is an emotional portrait, more than just a portrait, it is a cracker of a painting. The flat background and the brush strokes. When you compare it with the Australian Portrait Gallery, you see the early portraits, and then as they progress over time, you start to see the creativity. Here there is a creative use of colour, tones. I liked both works on display, but especially this one, awarded First Place. Well done. Congratulations.”

“Initially my eye followed the skin tones in a circular motion around the painting. Then the chair, the light coming through the window. The symbolism in the top corner. The placement of furniture. Interesting for the eye to explore. Then I read the title. It intrigued me. It was an invitation to make our own interpretation: the symbols in the work, the profile , the strong light. An interesting painting, well painted, it sucked me in. The placement of the arm centre front leads you in and around the painting. Technically speaking the table is wrong, but it has been abstracted and that works. The younger person in the right front makes us think; there is a story to be read into it. The eyes looking in through the window, compositionally don’t need to be there; if you cover it, the painting lacks nothing. I would like to ask the artist why is it there? I could take it or leave it”.
Carmel O’Connor, 'Seasons', oil on linen, 101 x 101 cm

Gillian Schofield, 'GEAS Founders', mixed media on 4 inch canvas boards, 36x36 cm. “This is the first time I have seen a collection of mini portraits presented as one art work. It works as a whole: the tones, the opposing colours used. I like the portrait of (Lilian Wienberg) best, bottom right.

“The line work, shape, colour, form, used all the way up to the horizon. The form used through the landscape. The cool greys on the warm background. Congratulations”.

Angeline Bartholomeusz, 'Watching the Crows Fly', Acrylic on canvas board 80 x 65 cm

“This combination of abstract shapes deserves a pat on the back”

Kate Birrell, 'Footy Piece 1', Acrylic on paper, cardboard and timber panel, 30 x 30 cm
