Peter Edgeley

In the Glen Eira Artists Society a common bond is painting En Plein Air, generally in Caulfield Park. The aim for me is to go back to basics, capturing the natural effects of light and colour. As Frenchman Camille Corrot once said "Go to the country - the muse is in the woods".

My process is to first sit and absorb the atmosphere and feel of the place, sometimes called the genius loci. I then start with a quick sketch in black and white to establish the overall composition and main areas of contrast. They are really loose scribbles but I like to stick to these initial reactions (see 2 attached sketchbook pages).

I then move to the final work on canvas. The marks and brush strokes are then an immediate response to the environment - spontaneous, unthinking, reactive and intuitive. After using acrylics for years I am now trying my hand at oil painting so I'm a beginner with this medium. I try to come without a preconceived idea, simply painting what I see …………. not what I know.

All the attached are produced in this step by step process and are painted in the open air. Some more urban views of streets and laneways are included with the landscapes.
